1, 4, 11, and 19.  These numbers have a lot in common. There are 1 in 4 adults age 65 and older who fall each year.  An older adult is seen in an emergency department every 11 seconds, and they’re often one of the deaths that occur every 19 minutes in our country from a fall-related incident. These are just some of the numbers that contribute to one of our country’s most significant epidemics to date:  falling among seniors.

Falls are one of the most frequent and serious problems facing the elderly. Falls have a proven association with mortality, morbidity, reduced functionality, and premature nursing home admissions.  They’re usually the result of multiple and diverse risk factors and situations that many times can be corrected, and their interaction is affected by age, disease, and the presence of hazards in the environment.
